Let me write a little about the food down here. Tamarindo is a surf village, so as Wilson pointed out, a great deal of cuisine is focused on the surfing crowd (pizza, burgers, etc). However, some fabulous chefs have also opened up shop here. We enjoyed wonderful food at Dragonfly. I had fresh mahi mahi -- it didn't even have a hint of fishy taste, just wonderful. W enjoyed a steak. We have also feasted on local Costa Rican fare (gallos pintos -- rice & beans, arroz con camarones -- shrimp & rice). The food has been fabulous.
The one downfall is that high chairs are hard to find. We have used the stroller as a high chair at our hotel for breakfast. A couple of restaurants have had them (beautiful, all wood, makes my Chicco high chair look super ugly). One restaurant offered me two chairs to put together for the "baby to sleep on". HA! We are so spoiled in the US to have high chairs every where. And changing stations. Poor Charlotte has had her diaper changed on the floor of the airport bathroom (a step above a Mexico airport bathroom but not too much) and on the floor of a restaurant bathroom. No changing tables to be found anywhere. I imagine Costa Ricans would think we American moms are super spoiled. Yes, yes, I am.
Charlotte for the most part has continued to be an exceptional baby. Dinnertime has been challenging because it hits around her bedtime. The first few nights she did okay. She threw a fit in the middle of a really nice restaurant (where I had the mahi mahi), so Wilson and I had to eat in shifts. The last two nights we have eaten a late lunch & opted for take out after she goes to bed.
We went to the National Park today -- Rincon del Viejo. We rented a Suzuki 4 wheel drive vehicle & headed out around 9 am, arriving at the park just before 11 am. It was beautiful -- so many diverse ecosystems. We started in cloudforest, where it was cold and raining and I was cursing Wilson for not telling me we needed jackets. We then passed through drizzly rainforest and got to see 10 or so monkeys swinging around. Such fun! We also passed mini volcanos, gurgling mud pots, and some steam lagunas with a sulphur smell. Tried to teach C "P-yu", didn't take. Wilson satisfied his need for some adventure, now we get to go back to my favorite: sit on the beach or by the pool & veg. Oh, and Wilson had to change a tire when we arrived at the National Park. Horrendous, rocky roads. Lulled C right to sleep, but hard on the tires. Wilson said it is probably expected that renters will pop a tire, as the car rental place showed him where the extra tire resided, along with all the tools to change it.
Looking forward to 2 more days of fun in the sun! I have decided that this is the best time to come to a tropical environment.....we love getting out of the cold weather!
